Hypnotherapy is a two way process between the therapist and
the client. A person cannot be hypnotised unless they agree and co-operate - this cannot be stressed enough. Also
whilst hypnotised nobody can make you do anything that you do not want to do. The people that you see on television
or on stage eating raw onions or behaving like a chicken are doing it because they want to. They have chosen to participate.
It must be emphasised here that
what hypnotherapists do is by its very definition 'therapeutic'. Stage hypnosis is very different as it is for entertainment
purposes.
Many people claim that they have never been hypnotised, but they do admit to have drifted off whilst thinking about
a loved one, forgetting large chunks of a car or bus journey or 'going somewhere else' whilst reading a good book. These
are all examples of natural trance states. The thing with hypnotherapy is that it draws on this quite natural trance
state to allow and provide positive therapeutic benefits.
The therapist merely helps you to use that incredible hidden ability to
achieve things in your life such as quitting smoking, weight management, stress reduction, gaining confidence and happiness
or even excelling at your chosen sport.
Hypnotherapy
myths
Hypnotherapy is not like stage hypnosis
and contrary to what some people believe hypnosis cannot make you do anything that you don't want to. You remain in
control at all times.
- You do not go to sleep
- You are not unconscious
- You do hear what is said
- You are free to open your eyes at any time
- People can't get stuck in a trance
- You are in control at all times
Remember, if at any time you feel
uncomfortable and you want to terminate the session then you will be perfectly capable to do so.
